Reading Strategies

Here are some comprehension strategies to add to your tool box.

1.  Monitor reading when something doesn't make sense.  Go back and reread a few times.  It's okay.  That's what good readers do.

2.  Ask questions before, during and after reading.

3.  Based on what you are reading, make predictions along the way.

4.  Make inferences using background knowledge (what you already know).  Read between the lines.  Why did the character make certain choices?  What are your thoughts?  Make sure you can show evidence for your thinking.

5.  Make connections.  Based on what you read, what are the characters feeling?  How do you know?

6.  Visualize/Envision the story as you are reading.  What pictures did you create in your mind?
